Taking on with the analogy of Blood & Oxygen in the body ahead ….

  As blood and oxygen are life lines; so also while setting up a new department it is important to address a few basic pertinent questions / issues:

Ø Developing Set Goals:

The goals should address patient and the healthcare service provider relationship, continuity of care processes and mechanisms, Key Performance Indicators (KPI) based on the need of creating this section

The goals also need to address the organization’s Core Values, Mission & Vision Statements for a cohesive and coordinated care across all of its platforms

Communication channels are also to be identified at this stage  

Ø  Developing Measurement Indicators:

Broadly speaking they can be segregated into:

–         Process-Related Measurement Indicators

–         Outcome-Related Measurement Indicators

–         Quality-Related Measurement Indicators

The goals also need to address the organization’s Core Values, Mission & Vision Statements for a cohesive and coordinated care across all of its platforms

Communication channels are also to be identified at this stage both Internal to the organization as well as with the patient and families and the communities that we serve

Ø Benchmarking & Quality Data Analysis:

To be the best in the industry, bench-marking oneself with the competitors gives an opportunity to enhance both Internal and external improvement platforms

It also sets standards on data driven and evidence based process integration, by having:

–         Unified data (this is a huge challenge in most of mid-sized corporate hospitals too)

–         Rework on policies from Patient Experience or Person Centered Care or Service Excellence (PX/PCC/ SXL) point of view to institute organization wide standardized implementation  

–         Standardized SMART Goals to break the silos that are currently in place

I recommend ….. BREAK THE BARRIERS:-

Ø To Form Collaborative Teams Which Include: Clinicians, Nursing, Administration And Corporate Leadership Teams At The Planning Stage

Ø Linking The Above Mentioned Teams With Operational And Service Excellence implementers – @ The Execution Stage

Ø For above mentioned activities allocation of RIGHT RESOURCES is paramount

Ø The resources should be hand-picked – those who will uphold organizations core values, mission & vision. basically – WHO WALK THE TALK

Ø Finally, COMMUNICATE…. COMMUNICATE…. COMMUNICATE….
